New Years Eve Conjunction

New Years Eve Conjunction TONIGHT!: Happy New Year! but before you watch fireworks tonight, look southwest 45 minutes after sunset - you'll like the view. High in the evening sky Venus shines brightly joined by the brilliant crescent moon. That's not all you will see, Jupiter and Mercury will be low to the horizon making a great binocular pair. Mercury will be the toughest to spot, but there should be about a 30 minute period where it will be very evident to the naked eye. Sky Map

Last night I trekked across this bridge from the Nebraska side, into Iowa and up the Missouri river in 30-40mph winds, and cold temperatures only to be disappointed with cloud cover to ruin the evening. I did snap one photo where Venus, the moon and Jupiter are visible though. Photo Specs: "camera- Nikon D40 1/2sec. exposure, f/5.6 ISO 200" Send me an email if you want your photograph on this site. Stay tuned to Tonight's Sky for updates on the next meteor shower peaking on January 3rd or 4th, as well as visible comets aurora borealis and much more!

Quadrantids Meteors: This shower will peak on the 3rd or 4th of the month. The Moon will be in Half phase, so expect moderate interference until it sets. Expect between 15-25 meteors per hour at the peak, but this showers' peak is known to last a very short time, between 1 and 2 hours.
